Please read this first before using your ACI Edible Printing System.
To get set up quickly, find the Canon Quick Start Guide and follow the instructions. Follow the instructions for installing the Canon ink cartridges to install the edible ink cartridges provided. Do not throw away the orange plastic tabs that come on the cartridges, you may need them at a later time for storage purposes.
Remember, do not use regular ink in this machine if you ever intend to use it to make edible pictures.
After you have installed the ink cartridges and connected the printer to your computer, you can now print images. Do not use the ‘Front Feed Feature’ when printing onto an icing sheet. The blank icing sheet(s) MUST be placed in the rear of the machine with the icing side of the paper facing you. Be sure to set the ‘Media Type’ to ‘Glossy Photo Paper and the ‘Print Quality’ to ‘High’ to get the best results. These can be found in the printer properties on the ‘Main’ tab.
You may need to adjust the intensity of the Magenta color to get the desired results. To do this, go to the printer properties of the Canon MX700 series Printer either from the ‘Print Preview’ feature of your software or click Start, click Control Panel, double click ‘Printers’, then right click Canon MX700 series printer, click Properties and click ‘Printing Preferences’. Under the ‘Main’ tab, select the option for Manual in the ‘Color/Intensity’ field. Click ‘Set’. In the ‘Color Balance’ field, set the Magenta to -3 (minus 3). Click OK.
We suggest that you experiment with this setting to find your preferred quality for your prints. Once you settle on a particular setting, you may want to save the setting for future use. To do this, open your printer properties, follow the steps above, and under the ‘Profiles’ tab, click ‘Add to Profiles’ button and give the setting a name and click OK.
Icing Sheets
DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
Store your icing sheets in a plastic sealed bag to prevent them from drying out.
You can prepare printed icing sheets in advance and store them in a sealed bag. Do not refrigerate, just store in a dry place away from direct sunlight.
To use:
Once your image is ready to print-out, remove the icing sheet from the sealed bag and place it, frosting side up, in the rear paper tray of your edible imaging printer. Remember to reseal the bag to keep the remaining icing sheets from drying out.
Let the image dry, and then remove the icing sheet from the backing by pulling the backing page across the edge of a table, the icing sheet should separate easily. Hold the sheet at the edges, letting the sheet sag slightly in the middle. Place the middle part of the sheet on the cake first, centering it and then lower the rest of the sheet until the whole sheet is on the cake surface. If there are bubbles or bumps, gently smooth the icing sheet with your fingers starting in the center and working your way out to the edges.
Let the image sit for about 20 minutes before cutting.
The icing sheet is stuck to the backing
Weather conditions, especially humidity, can effect icing sheets and make them harder to remove from the backing. If you cannot remove the icing sheet from the backing, there are several tricks you can try. Use a hair dryer for 2 minutes or place the icing sheet in the freezer for up to 45 seconds, remove by pulling the backing page across the edge of a table.
Ink Cartridges
DO NOT REFRIGERATE.
The ink cartridges we sell on our website are cartridges that are compatible with the Canon systems we sell. The cartridges have microchips attached to them which allow the printer to read the ink level in each cartridge.
When the printer cannot read the ink level or cannot detect the cartridge at all, this may be due to a dysfunctional microchip. If this happens, you can still use the cartridge by replacing the microchip from another cartridge of the same color.
If you are having trouble with getting ink to flow from the cartridge, squeeze the cartridge, sponge side down, over a trash can or sink until you see ink dripping out or tap the cartridge hard on the edge of the trash can or sink until you see ink drops.
PRINTER MAINTENANCE
An Edible Imaging System works best when used frequently.
If you are not using it at least twice a week we recommend you print an image out on a regular piece of paper once or twice a week. If you will not be using your system for longer then a week, we
suggest you clean the print head and store it and the ink cartridges (with their orange tabs) in sealed bags.
How to run a nozzle check
Before you start printing and anytime you have a printing problem it is best to run a nozzle check.
If you have a stand-alone system you can find the nozzle check by clicking the settings icon on the LCD. Then choose maintenance.
If you have asystem connected to your computer you will find the nozzle checkby clicking file, then print, choose printer properties, then choose maintenance.
Follow the directions to determine if there is a clog in the print head. If there is you can click on deep cleaning which you can find on the same page as the nozzle check. This function will push ink through the print head to dislodge any dried ink that may be clogging the print head. After the cleaning run another nozzle check, if there is an improvement try running another cleaning. If there is little or no improvement you may need to use cleaning cartridges or print head cleaning solution.
Keep in mind, print heads will not last as long as your printer system. You may need to replace the print head every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you use your system. It’s best to always have a spare available.
How to use the print head cleaning solution
-
Take out the ink cartridges and place them upside down with the nozzles facing up.
-
Lift up the gray lever on the printing carriage.
-
Remove the print head from the printer and rinse the nozzles with warm running water until the water runs clear.
-
Place the print head on a paper towel and squirt a few drops of solution on the clogged nozzle. Leave for at least 15 minutes, longer if you have a bad clog.
-
Rinse again with warm water and let air-dry.
-
Once the print head is dry place it back into the printer, re-insert the ink cartridges and run a cleaning.
-
Print a nozzle check to make sure ink is flowing well again.
If you still have a clog after cleaning you may need a new print head. If this is the case, please call an ACI support representative.
